Since 1993, BENCHMARK Adventure Ministries has been
about spiritual growth and leadership development through
small group experiences. This provides all involved the opportunity
to see who they are and how they respond. These
experiences can lead toward profound life change.
Even our annual fund-raiser, the Chuck Wilson Memorial
Backpack for BENCHMARK is an experience to develop
people. We take on a formidable chunk of the Appalachian
Trail to do in just 3 days. This year it was 43.2 miles. That’s
pretty high miles for weekenders, but it’s appropriate for an organization that’s all about challenge.
This 13th Annual Chuck Wilson Memorial Backpack for BENCHMARK funding hike was October 18-21, 2007. Nine
hikers backpacked 43.2 miles of the Appalachian Trail, starting at Hurricane Gap, hiking right through the middle of
Hot Springs, NC and on to I-40 near the TN/ / NC state line.
The weather was amazing. A sprinkling of rain, and a great variety after that. Much warmer than normal for this time
of year. The leaves were near peak. We were up before daylight on Sunday to watch the sunrise from Max Patch. A
great choice. Some other early mornings and some long miles; Friday 12.5 miles, Saturday 16.6 miles and Sunday
14.1 miles. There were wonderful snapshots of creation all around us and in each other.
